Only priests (bishops and presbyters) are ministers of the "Anointing of the Sick". This sacrament can be a private or communal celebration. It can take place in a family home, a hospital or church, and can be done to a single person or a group of sick people. It can be received more than once. It can be done prior to someone facing a serious operation. The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. It is for people of old age and frailty or those who are sick. It can be repeated during an illness if the conditions of the person become more serious.
The Sacrament of "Anointing of the Sick"
The celebration of the "Anointing of the Sick" consists essentially in anointing of the forehead and hands. Liturgical prayers accompany the celebration and the laying of hands on the head may also accompany this celebration. Those who receive the anointing experience the compassion of Christ and his saving love in body and soul.
